The issue of water security of the state has been considered at the NSDC Staff
Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksiy Danilov held a regular meeting of the working group on water security of the state and providing the population with quality drinking water in the settlements of Ukraine.
During the meeting, representatives of ministries and agencies, research institutions, specialists of the NSDC Staff considered the state of surface water bodies and forecast indicators of surface water resources for the population and industries of Ukraine during 2021.
The NSDC Secretary stressed that the approach to solving water problems and providing the population with quality drinking water should be comprehensive, and local self-government authorities are responsible for the quality of water supplied to the population of a particular community.
Mr. Danilov also stressed the need to develop a national program for cleaning rivers and lakes. In this context, according to the NSDC Secretary, the key issue is to conduct an inventory of surface water bodies and groundwater sources of drinking water.
“All water bodies must have an owner - whether it is a local government or a state institution that will be fully responsible for the proper maintenance of these objects”, - he said adding that the law on land decentralization recently signed by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy opens up all possibilities for this.
The meeting also touched upon the need to attract investment for the modernization of centralized water supply systems, to introduce modern water purification technologies, to prepare projects of alternative sources of water supply in low-water regions of Ukraine, the need to develop a new Climate Program of Ukraine, etc.
