Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov held a meeting with Secretary of State for Defense of the United Kingdom Michael Fallon.

During the meeting, the interlocutors discussed the current situation in the east of Ukraine and the efforts of the Russian Federation to increase its influence on the world stage through destabilizing the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East. The parties paid particular attention to the issues of reforming the security and defense sector of Ukraine in accordance with the NATO standards and deepening Ukrainian-British cooperation in the military-technical sphere.

According to Mr. Turchynov, "we consider a strategic mistake" the blocking of supplies of lethal weapons to Ukraine or technologies of its production. "After all, the security of Europe depends on Ukrainian defense potential", - he said adding that Great Britain has always supported our country, "and we are grateful for this, but we believe that the time has come for our cooperation to rise to a higher level".

The NSDC Secretary emphasized that the situation in the world requires consistent and firm stand "on combating terrorism and military aggression, without which it is impossible to restore the system of collective security".

In his turn, the State Secretary stressed that Great Britain is interested in increasing assistance to Ukraine: "We hope to gradually increase assistance and to step up the level of military-technical cooperation".

Mr. Fallon also reassured that Great Britain's position regarding the sanctions pressure on the aggressor state remains unchanged. "Sanctions against the Russian Federation are needed until the Minsk agreements are fulfilled completely", - he emphasized adding that "the conflict in Ukraine stays in the field of our attention, and Britain will further support Ukraine on its democratic path".
