Oleksandr Turchynov: A strong family is becoming a key factor of Ukraine’s national security
A strong intact family able to give birth to and, most importantly, to raise children, today is becoming one of the most vital factors of national security, on which the survival and future of Ukraine depend. This was stated by Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov at the IV All-Ukrainian Family Forum.
According to him, for five years, Russia has been waging brutal attritional war against us. "Over five years, the war has taken lives of 13 thousand Ukrainians, about 3 thousand of them are servicemen. These are terrible figures, but they do not determine the dangerous demographic crisis in our country. In such a way, in 2018, 335 thousand babies were born in Ukraine, and 587 thousand people died. Which means that Ukrainians became less by 252 thousand over one year. And this black trend is only getting worse every year", - the NSDC Secretary said adding that according to statistics, in 2018, the birth rate in Ukraine fell by 7% compared with last year, and "the number of aborted pregnancies only in official medical institutions each year is over 100 thousand!".
Mr. Turchynov stressed that these statistics are accompanied by "migration tsunami, which are "washing away" huge intellectual and labor reserves from the country". "As a result, Ukraine ranked first among the countries with the most rapid decline of the working population, and in terms of aging - the 29th place in the world", - he noticed stressing that population decline becomes one of the key factors threatening not only the country's national security but also the very existence of our nation.
"Creating conditions for decent life and protection of the family, family values, support and upbringing of children is one of the main priorities of a responsible country, which, unfortunately, is far from the first place in ours", - the NSDC Secretary noted.
In his opinion, one of the tools for protecting family and family values may be the establishment of a state institution that will "take care of these issues, provide planning and implementation of large-scale state programs on family support, creating conditions for the birth and upbringing of children".
