Address of Secretary of the NSDC of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov on the occasion of the Kruty Heroes Remembrance Day
Today is the Kruty Heroes Remembrance Day. Almost a hundred years have passed since the time when around four hundred brave young men entered an unequal battle with the Russian-Bolshevik horde. And these brave and courageous warriors-patriots managed to do the impossible - to stop the enemy who dominated them over 10 times. To stop the enemy for four days.
In 1918, about thirty boys, receding, reached the Kruty station, which had already been seized by the Red Army soldiers. Enraged by significant combat losses, the Red commander gave the order to shoot down the young men. There is evidence that Grigoriy Pipskyy, a student of the Kyiv Ukrainian Gymnasium named after the Brotherhood of Saints Cyril and Methodius, was the first who started to sing «Shche ne vmerla Ukraina» before shooting, and the rest of the students condemned to death caught up the song. In such a way, they died singing. They were killed because it was impossible to win them, to break down and eradicate the spirit of freedom and faith in Ukraine...
That time we failed to unite Ukrainians to rebuff the enemy and protect our freedom and independence. We lost our country for over 70 years.
We gained our own statehood, and now like then, we must fight for it. Like then, the best sons of Ukraine are dying for independent and united State. But now we were able to stop the enemy and protect our country.
May the memory and honor of the fallen heroes - the heroes of the XX century and their descendants, the heroes of the XXI century - live forever!
To become truly free, we need to be strong. Not only as a country able to defend itself, but to be strong in spirit. The road will be handled by the walker. Day by day, step by step we have to liberate our land from the Russian aggressors. This is our way, and we will pass it till final victory! With faith: in God, in ourselves, in Ukraine - we shall win!
