Address of NSDC Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repressions

Today Ukraine is honoring the memory of the victims of political repressions.

The pallid statistics shows that as a result of political repressions, more than half a million of Ukrainians died. And how many of them went over the Stalin's camps, Siberian settlements, suffered from fiendish tortures and persecutions! How many were forced to leave their Motherland forever! Behind each destiny there are sorrow, tears and suffering of the whole Ukraine. Mutilated families, children left without parents, constant fear and suspicions.

The things, which happened in the Soviet Union, today are happening in Putin's totalitarian Russia, where political repressions have become a life norm, as well as in the territories occupied by it, particularly, in the Crimea. It is there, where like 72 years ago, the genocide of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people is taking place again.

The Revolution of Dignity snatched Ukraine from the steel embrace of the totalitarian neighbor, thwarting the imperial mirage of the Kremlin leaders. May the memory of those killed and tortured in the Soviet concentration camps live forever...We should remember this...We must make every effort, so that nothing alike happens again in Ukraine, and to defend our country against Russia's aggressive encroachments.

We shall struggle and overcome, God helps us!
