Oleksandr Turchynov: The system of security in Europe should be not formal but efficient

The system of security in Europe should be not formal but efficient. This was stated by Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov in his interview to "Interfax-Ukraine" news agency.

Answering the question whether the consultations with Western partners were held regarding placement of missile defense system on the territory of Ukraine, Mr. Turchynov reminded that he spoke of the possible consultation on this issue, when Russia began preparations for placement of offensive means in the Crimea, including those that can carry nuclear warheads.

"Then I emphasized that this is not only Ukraine's problem, this is a problem for Europe, for the entire civilized world, and therefore Ukraine cannot counteract  this very dangerous process by itself", - NSDC Secretary of Ukraine said. At that, he reminded of the Budapest Memorandum, stressing that Ukraine voluntarily gave up its nuclear arsenal - one of the most powerful in the world.

"When they are planning to deploy nuclear weapons at the occupied territories - it is a very serious challenge. That is why I believe that there should be not formal but effective system of security in Europe. Including the reliable missile defense system, part of which should be Ukraine", - Oleksandr Turchynov stated.

To the best belief of NSDC Secretary of Ukraine, the countries signatories of the Budapest Memorandum, "of course, except the aggressor - Russia, who has ostentatiously renounced its obligations", are obliged to defend Ukraine from possible missile and air strikes on the side of the Russian Federation.

"We need a unified missile defense system in Europe which will protect both our country and all the Europe. The "Oriental Rampart", invincible for aircrafts and missiles, as well as insurmountable for land vehicles, should be created. It must extend from Norway through Ukraine and end in Turkey. You call this system not missile defense system but, for example, ESS (European Security System) or the same "Oriental Rampart" - it is not about the name but of the essence" - Oleksandr Turchynov stated.
