During the first month of operation of the Protective DNS system, losses of Ukrainians from financial phishing decreased by more than 30%

On March 14, 2023, a working meeting was held on the basis of the National Cybersecurity Coordination Center at the NSDC of Ukraine on the functioning of the Protective DNS system, designed to combat financial phishing. During the event, issues related to intermediate results and possible improvement of the system were discussed. Representatives of the legislative and executive branches of government, the banking sector, representatives of the telecom business and specialized associations took part in the discussion.

In February of this year, the Protective DNS system was implemented in Ukraine. It provides filtering of phishing sites, thus hindering the activities of cybercriminals, and Ukrainians have received additional protection from fraudsters on the Internet. More than 320 Ukrainian providers who are responsible for the security of their customers have already joined the system. Among them are the largest market players - Kyivstar, lifecell, Vodafone, Ukrtelecom, Datagrup and Volya.

"For the first month of the system's operation, we already have significant results - the volume of phishing fraud in monetary terms has dropped by approximately 40-50%, and the number of appeals from defrauded citizens - by 30-40%. In general, these are tens or even hundreds of millions of hryvnias every month, which Ukrainians will not lose thanks to the operation of the system," Head of the NCSCC Support Service of the NSDC Staff Serhiy Prokopenko said.

When trying to go to a phishing site, Protective DNS redirects users to a page with a threat warning and cyber hygiene recommendations. "The system analyzes only sites that have signs of financial phishing. Every provider connected to the system has access to the list of phishing domains," Serhiy Prokopenko added.

The participants of the meeting supported the implementation of the system and emphasized its effectiveness in combating financial phishing. At the same time, representatives of the Internet Association of Ukraine offered to consider proposals for improving the regulations of the system.
