A meeting with the representatives of the International Advisory Group on reforming the Security Service of Ukraine took place at the NSDC Staff
Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksandr
Danyliuk, Acting Head of the Security Service of Ukraine Ivan Bakanov, experts
of the NSDC Staff and Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine
Ruslan Ryaboshapka met with the representatives of the International Advisory
Group (IAG).
During the meeting, the parties discussed topical security issues, in
particular, reforming the Security Service of Ukraine. Members of the IAG,
which includes representatives of the European Union, the EU Advisory Mission
(EUAM), NATO and the United States Embassy in Ukraine, expressed their support
for the Ukrainian authorities' stance on the need to urgently reform the
Security Service of Ukraine, with due respect for the stage-by-stage approach
to this process.
The NSDC Secretary stressed that the working group is constantly developing
draft laws that will regulate the reform process of Ukrainian law enforcement
agencies. "During the next meeting of the expert group, the concept of the SSU
reform and related legislative developments will be discussed", - he said.
Oleksandr Danyliuk also noticed that reforming the SSU is a requirement of
the Law of Ukraine "On National Security", with its main purpose being the
strengthening of the key functions of the Security Service, in particular,
counterintelligence. "This is teamwork. We act as one team upon instructions of
the President of Ukraine", - Mr. Danyliuk underscored.
